What Is Secondary Glazing and What Are Its Advantages

This guidance provides valuable advice on the principles, disadvantages, substances and procedures for updating the thermal performance of windows with the inclusion of secondary glazing.

Windows make a significant contribution towards the nature of historic buildings and every attempt should be made to keep them. They could additionally show a great deal about the history of a construction; shifting architectural taste and fashion, social hierarchy, building economics, craft abilities and industrial progress.

Older windows may well be draughty as eventually they distort as joints become distressed. Although sufficient venting is crucial in older buildings extreme air leakage through windows squanders heat and is depressed for occupants.

Carefully planned and installed secondary glazing enables the initial windows to be maintained unchanged, and where necessary fixed, whilst reducing air flows and conducted heat decreases. Thus there isn’t a damage to historic material as good as in most cases the setup is readily reversible.

Recent study has shown heat losses by conduction and radiation through a window typically talking can be decreased by over 60% by using secondary glazing with a low emissivity (low-E) tough coating facing the outside. The research has also demonstrated that additional savings can be made if the secondary glazing utilises insulating frameworks or uses double or vacuum glazed units.

Along with raising the thermal performance of windows, secondary glazing can have several added extra advantages including being exceptionally successful at restricting sound transmission.

For listed properties it is necessary to refer to the Conservation Officer at the local planning authority for guidance ahead of the installation of secondary glazing. Listed Building Mandate may be required in some situations.

Just what is secondary glazing?

Secondary glazing is nothing new. In the 19th century some buildings were built with internal secondary glazing designed as part of the initial layout. Frequently another double hung sash window or solid panels with counterbalancing weights were fitted in the space below the window. Their function was to decrease the heat loss and provide some measure of sound insulation to the window aperture.

Secondary glazing is a completely separate window system applied to the room side of pre-existing windows. The first windows stay in place and in their original unaltered form.

Secondary glazing can be found as open-capable, removable or fixed components. The open-capable panels can be either casements or sliding sashes. These kinds allow accessibility to the outside window for cleaning and the opening of both the secondary glazing and outside windows for fresh air. New secondary glazing was created to be detached in warmer months when its thermal extra advantages aren’t required.

Using glazed outside protection for windows using either glass or plastic sheet is known as ‘storm glazing’ rather than merely secondary glazing. Doing this can frequently be used to shield stained glass in churches. Using this kind of system, it’s crucial that you comprehend the potential conditions this creates in the airspace between the present glazing and the additional outside glazing where venting will be needed. Report should also be taken of the environmental conditions inside the construction before designing the setup.

One alternative would be to install storm glazing in winter and remove it in the summertime.

Fixing existing window openings

Recognized hardwood and metal windows can more often than not be restored, even when in relatively inferior state and as a rule at significantly less cost than complete replacement. The strong lumber used before to make windows was of a high quality and quite durable.

Tons of Georgian and Victorian windows are still in place now whilst modern windows can need replacing after just 20 years. Re-building windows is the best method of keeping the visual nature and architectural importance of a building’s elevation and can add to its worth.

Before beginning any updating work including draught-stripping or the adding of secondary glazing, assess what repairs are needed to make the windows completely operational. Windows deteriorate over time so standard renovation, cleaning procedures and painting is always an excellent investment.

For listed buildings, the complete replacement of a window will probably entail Listed Building Consent.

Secondary glazing or double glazing?

Double glazed windows usually have sealed glazing units with 2 panes of glass broken up by an air gap (usually of 12-18 millimetre) that improves thermal insulating material, especially if the glass is coated and the air gap is filled with an inert gas. It’s a significant development that’s generated substantial energy cost savings and reductions in carbon dioxide emissions, especially in new buildings. The Building Regulations make double glazing pretty much obligatory in new building.

Frequently the replacement of present windows using double glazed units can in many scenarios lead to a change in look, especially the smoothness of new glass and the demand for broader hardwood segments and glazing bars.

In historic buildings, there should be a strong taste for renovation as an alternative to replacing as the utilization of double glazing will necessarily bring about a reduction of conventional material. Adding secondary glazing would normally be the favoured option.

The advantages of double glazing over alternate approaches of window enhancement in many cases are overestimated. Much of the relaxation and energy performance advantages of new double glazing come from the decrease in draughts which will result from well-fitted window frames with built-in draught-proofing. These additional benefits are also accessible through repair and draught-proofing of the present windows, or from fitted secondary glazing. With standard progress in the efficacy of secondary glazing it may even be potential for the operation of secondary glazed windows to surpass that of new double glazing.

When it comes to sound removal, double glazed units are not any better than single glazed units; and can be to some degree subordinate for traffic sound. The significant principles for noise reduction are that the windows are nicely suited and draught-proofed. Secondary glazing, with its considerably broader gap between the window panes, is a better sound insulator. Wooden shutters and heavy drapes may also make remarkable progress to sound insulation.

Why I Love Myself

I felt a great relief and delight to try different ways to love myself and appreciate the advantages. My relationship with others has magically enhanced ever since. So, I would like to share my findings with you and hopefully this may bring you some happiness.

The essential difference between these two is that being selfish is due to lacking something internally and not being conscious of that. It could be too little love, assurance, security or real well-being. Those who are self-centred have probably not yet accepted what they lack and instead of working on these places, they instinctively attempt to get others to fulfil these needs for them. The goal is constantly on others. Whether it is about what they are able to get from others, defending themselves from others or needing things from others… While it may not be nice to come across this kind of situation, but understanding that these people are simply attempting to get their internal needs satisfied, may supply us with more choices to how better respond to it.

Self-love occurs when someone KNOWS about themselves and COMPLETELY accepting themselves for who they are. Individuals who love themselves take responsibility and total possession of their own needs and wants. They understand that they’re responsible for their needs and they’re capable to satisfy these needs by themselves. They establish healthy personal boundaries and express what they desire and desire in a kind manner. The goal isn’t to “take” from others, but to honour and fulfil their own needs.

Understanding that, we constantly have to place on our own oxygen mask first, and after that help others. Why is that? Picture if you are feeling really tired and need to catch up with sleep, but you have made an appointment with your partner for dinner and a movie tonight. What would you do? If you carry on anyhow without expressing your worn-out feeling and the need to sleep, you may be unable to show up during the dinner and film. Even if nothing bad happens, would you love the entire experience? Because of this, would you be happy? Would your partner be joyful? Now, let us go back to the oxygen mask question, the reason is when we’ve fulfilled our own needs, it enables us to better help others to fulfil their needs. Likewise, when we love ourselves, it enables us to better adore people around us.

Now, you may still not be 100% clear on the difference between “love yourself” and “being self-centred”. It is OK. We can make an effort to go deeper and let us consider the last paragraph’s example. You may stress that expressing your feelings and demands may disturb your partner, may cause an argument or being judged as self-centred. I concur there are distinct ways of conveying and with different individuals it works otherwise. But keep in mind expressing your feelings and demands does not mean visiting your wants on your partner. It is about expressing your true-self and seeking for understanding and reciprocal arrangement. It is vital that you let your partner to pick what they would like to do to best get their own needs fulfilled. In this situation, they may select to only have a basic dinner and postpone the film. They may select to allow you to rest and go to dinner and film with somebody else. They may additionally choose to postpone the entire event. Having the ability to express yourself really and honour your partner’s selection creates actual familiarity for the relationship which can let you both to better adore each other later on. This doesn’t only apply to adoring relationship, but to any form of relationship. Can you see how it is different from being self-centred? If your partner isn’t able to provide understanding and support your main needs, let yourself to be with an alternate partner.

If you’re feeling you fight with loving yourself, it is possible to discover lots of recourses on the web, publications, videos, podcasts, etc. The truth is, self-love is the supreme aim for all type of self-development and religious works. It is a nicely developed region. Here I want to only introduce two small suggestions which have helped me before.

1, Write a list of stuff you’re good at and things you truly value yourself for. It can be as little as “I cook yummy chicken soup.” Or “I draw nicely.” If you really struggle with this, you can ask friends and family to help. Ask them to write down “What do you gain from being buddies with me?” Add the reply to your list. Each day, review the list when you awaken and before you sleep, let yourself to feel the enjoyment of reading it through.

2, Whenever you do not understand what to do or which choice to make, ask yourself “What would someone who adores themselves do?” accept the response and action on it. When you ask yourself this question, your instinct will automatically give you the response, it does not matter how little the verdict is. It could be “Should I have an apple or a banana?” Your instinct understands at that specific instant, an apple or a banana would be better for your body.

Fixing a broken window yourself

I have tried to do this in years gone by using putty, glass from a glazier and a glass cutter with pins and little success. It does look an easy thing to do but clearly from my own experience, it isn’t and it is easy to break lots of panes of glass or not cut them correctly because it seems more of an art form then a science. In the olden days when a pane of glass in a window in your house or garage or whatever you are in, it seemed quite a simple job to replace the glass. And having read about it in the famous big red readers digest book, it seems quite simple.

Just take the glass that is broken out of the window frame, clean out all of the old putty, go and buy the correct size glass, go and buy new putty either find or buy some pins to keep the glass in the frame and then you have all the necessary items you need to fix that pane of glass.

As I mentioned before I have tried this several times with windows that are broken by my son playing football or myself playing football and in years gone by as I mentioned what one did was to go and fix the glass yourself. I don’t see a lot of glass fixing by D I Y people these days I think it is more difficult because most windows are double glazed and made especially for the window frame.

Therefore I believe if you have a single pane of glass that is single glazing, you probably could have a go yourself and fix it because I believe you can still purchase all of the items mentioned above the putty, pins and glass and have a go yourself. I would recommend getting somebody in if you can to help you because it is not easy and it often looks a mess because the putty is not easy to keep flat and neat and in my case always looked a mess :-).

That may not be the most useful piece of information to help you with broken windows, I hope it was of some use I think the moral of the story is, if you have the skills please try and do it yourself if not call somebody in who is a professional if you want a professional job, I call in Westminster Glass 24/7 my local glazier.

Why pests love our bathrooms?

Pests, bugs, flies, insects, you name it they all make it to the bathroom, in search of damp, warmth, moist atmosphere and food in the form of dead skin, hair, actually name it, whatever falls off of your body is fair game to these pests. And pests pose a very serious threat, they are a health risk and hazard waiting to happen. Especially with children old folks, babies and people with immune systems that are weaker than normal due to various issues with their own health. Once people get low for all manner of reasons they are susceptible to disease, germs and bacteria carried by these pests and marched into our bathrooms.

These pest come in the form of;

  1. Ants
  2. Cockroaches
  3. Silverfish
  4. Spiders
  5. Flies of various varieties
  6. Rats
  7. Mice

Once they get into a bathroom, which is easy enough and they find food, they signal to their colony or group that this is a good place for food and you get infestation. You have to take quick action to eliminate them and that is either to get the relevant product as beating them with a stick doesn’t work any more or call a professional in to treat the issue, which is normally a better idea as they will get it done, where your home grown method is fraught with issues.

Eliminating Pests From Your Bathroom

To lower the chances of a pest invasion, always keep your bathroom clean, as there will then be nothing for them to consume. Clean properly with hot water and a soap product of some sort and clean everywhere. But even with you cleaning, pests still get in, and if this is the case, it is advisable as mentioned above to get in a professional pest controller. There are many around, one we found to be good while in California on vacation was the super pest control company. They were very quick to turn up and deal with the problem.

But it obviously depends on were you are  in the world.

Take care out there and don’t let the bed bugs bite. 🙂
